i have 2 male ddb who are completely different in everyway.beau is just over 2 .we got him at 6 weeks not knowing anything about the breed.wow were we in for a shock.first was the rate he grew then discovering they are prone to lots of health problems with this in mind insurance was a must, however ddb are in a different cat to most breeds like rotty, ridgebacks and silimiar dogs they cost a lot more to cover i now pay £39 per month per dog it is a good policy though.beau became unwell at about 7 months he went off his food lost weight and showed signs of stomach pains it was heartbreaking for me and was forever at the vets anyway it turn out he had a food intolerance to the food he ate most days chicken he was intorent to most meats except lamb so we change his diet to lamb and jameswellbeloved dry food and he is fine other than the odd ear infection he is now a fit heathly strong 12.5 stone stunner he is lean and very active he is quick and darts around like a loon he loves water ducking his head under like a feeding duck and loves football fitting a size 5 ball in his mouth with ease however he is very protective of the females in the family and is agresive to any stranger within sight even if they are walking in the opposite direction no where near us this means i cannot exercise him he wont let anyone in the house unless my partner is present and flips if anyone walks past the house he sits lookin out the window waiting for them.when he was 18mths old a nearby family got a ddb pup who was totally lush but to my horror he was not looked after properly at all from 8 weeks he was outside day n night and any child that wanted to walk him could meaning he was dragged around for hrs by one kid then dragged around again by another and another i tryed to explain the damage this could do i also would take him home to feed him clean his ears worm him ect he never wanted to go home and id worry for him when he did .beau took to him well .anyway one day when he was 4.5mths old he was giving a hiding and kicked out for weeing indoors a tearful child knocked on my door sayin he was no longer wanted so i took him in with the intention of finding him a good home as much as i loved him i feared as he got older they may fight. he is the most loving adorable well behaved friendly little man id ever met.after about a week i notice him limping he was also very stiff at 5 months we discovered he had severe dysplasia in all his legs he was put on metacam and needed surgery on all legs hip replacements could not be done til he reach a year so both elbow were operated on first this was purely for pain relif as there is no cure for his elbows and arthritis will set in .the cost of this op including the xrays and cat scan cost 4500 his insurance covered him for 7000 so that was taken care of last week he had his first hip replacement costing 5000 follow up xrays will cost 350 and removing stitches and check up is 100 the grand total being 9995 costing me 2995.thank god for credit cards i am now in debt and will struggle to repay it i dont begruge him a penny however i do the vets .i suppose im trying to say look in to the breed you buy and all that comes with them get good insurance and be prepared to payout lots of money on food policys ect be prepaired for lots of excercise when they are fully grown n just think of the time money and effort required to care for them properly.
